Sitka Jazz Workshop

The Sitka Jazz Workshop is a multi-age, intensive jazz program. Join professional bassist Christian Fabian, recording artist and bass player with the Lionel Hampton Big Band, and other world-class jazz faculty. During Sitka Jazz Workshop you will learn jazz basics and jazz stars’ secrets: how to swing, how to sing, how to scat, improvisation on jazz piano, drums, bass, vibraphone, and all wind instruments. They will also show you how to compose jazz, how to make a jazz arrangement out of any melody, how to arrange jazz trios, quartets, 10 piece and big band music and much more. You will learn how to play jazz better and have more fun doing it when you finish this week, no matter what level you’re at—beginner, experienced player, professional musician or teacher. If you’re a current elementary, middle or high school teacher, Sitka Jazz Workshop classes can add effective new ideas and techniques to your jazz pedagogy.

Special Guest Faculty for Summer 2017: Mike Longo, Tierney Sutton, and Dennis Yerry

“Sitka Jazz Week at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp is one of the most enriching, exciting, innovative, and informative events of the year. The weeklong program is  comprehensive, immersing participants in the rudiments of creating jazz music within a very supportive environment by highly qualified teachers!” – Dee Daniels, jazz vocalist

“A summer week on a beautiful southern Alaskan island? Eagles in the air and the salmon running? A gorgeous rustic campus filled with other arts campers? Top-notch teachers? A relatively small…and thus very personally engaged by the faculty…group of students? Where do I sign up?” – Sam Burtis, trombone player

“Sitka is a magical place that is brimming with soul. Jazz is a special, American music that is also packed with deep feeling. It only makes sense that when the two converge, you have the most artistically stimulating environment that one can find. I know. I was there and experienced it. You won’t regret your trip to Sitka.” – John Clayton, bassist

“After reading the brochures describing the mountain views….the fresh air….the love, care, and concern for jazz, I’m considering booking a flight up there!” – Ron Carter, bassist
